What’s in it for you: see how Google Analytics’ new weighted sort will help you save time and get more insight
It’s like waking up in the morning to a nice cup of coffee already brewed just for you. Google Analytics continues to add features that give you that ‘ahhhh so nice’ feeling. It’s the little things that add up to greatness.
So let’s see what it looks like. I’m going to see all my referring sites and see which ones have high bounce rates.
Next, I’m going to sort by bounce rate by clicking on the “Bounce Rate” header to the right. Now you get a simple sorted by 100% and down. The problem is, there’s tons of “1″ or “2″ visits that are pretty much useless data points.
Now here’s the new feature. As you see in the above picture, a “Weighted Sort” check box appears after you perform the original sort.
Check that box, and now look what happens. Bam!
The more relevant referring sites with bounce rates now come to the top. In the past if there were a lot of data points, you would need to kick the data out to Excel and run your own sort to get to this point. The smart people at Google Analytics have heard the suggestions and added this nice feature for your convenience.
This feature can be applied to most of the popular computed metrics as well as set Goals.
I don’t see a way to perform the weighted sort using an Advanced Segment filter… but I’m sure they’ll feature this in the future.
Take away: Use the weighted sort to fend off the useless data points and save time!
